The World's Largest Ram! Woah!

Greetings prospective students and parents! Chapel Hill is an amazing place, and there are thousands of things you cannot find anywhere else, but did you know that we are also home to the world’s largest ram? Sculpted in 2002 by Kent Ullberg and donated by former track and field star, Irwin Belk, and other members of his family, “The Ram” stands just outside Keenan Stadium looking over campus, and is proudly displayed as the world’s largest sculpture of a ram, weighing over one ton and made of solid bronze.

How does it feel to stand in this monstrous Ram’s presence? Quite peaceful and pleasant actually. It stands in an area that generates an excellent breeze, where few people walk, and is nice and quiet a majority of the time. It is a humbling experience to stand next to “The Ram” and see how big it actually is.

The ram itself stands on a beautiful stone perch, which adds an excellent touch to the surroundings and the statue itself and is adorned by a plaque explaining who donated it the sculpture’s significance. The area behind the ram is a pleasant arbor of small trees and shrub, which also enhance the already majestic statue.

The statue is an important symbol of UNC’s beloved mascot. The stunning pose of the iconic ram befits the fiery pride UNC students have in being Tar Heels. Every student loves Ramses the Ram, and the statue shows the ram in all its glory as the only thing worthy of being the University of North Carolina’s mascot.
